Roof Leaking Out of Control? Here’s What to Do

Published

on

Roof Leak

The roof on your home is the first line of defense against rain, hail, snow, and wind. It helps keep the cold air out in the winter, and hot air out in the summer. The roof also keeps unwanted animals and pests out of your home.

As one of the most important elements of your home’s construction, it needs to be taken care of. If there’s an issue, it needs to be remedied immediately, lest your house suffers additional damage.

Wondering what to do if your roof is leaking? There are a few steps you can take to protect your home, prevent bigger issues, and get your roof fixed. Keep reading below to learn who to call for water leak in the ceiling, and how to fix a leaking roof temporarily, until help arrives.

Risks of Roof Leak

If your roof leak is minor and doesn’t look like it’s causing any damage, it might be tempting to ignore it, so you don’t have to pay any expensive repair bills. But ignoring a leak is the worst thing you can do.

If there’s water getting through the roof, then your shingles have sustained damage somewhere. Water is getting in and it’s causing damage to your roof and ceiling joists. Too much exposure to moisture could compromise the structural integrity of your roof.

Now, instead of just replacing your shingles, you’ll need to pay for even more expensive joist repair.

And if water is getting into your attic, then your insulation could be getting soaked. Wet insulation starts to clump and isn’t able to prevent air from passing through. Your insulation becomes worthless and needs replacing.

Anywhere that moisture gets to inside the home is likely to develop mold and mildew, unless you can find the moisture and dry it.

And as water makes its way down further into the home, it’s likely to cause sagging drywall on your ceilings and walls. Throughout your attic, ceiling, and walls, you like to have electrical wiring. Exposure to water could create a fire hazard.

So your roof leak, even if it’s only a small amount of water, is a really big problem.

What to Do If Your Roof Is Leaking

It makes sense to fix your roof leak before any of the bigger problems listed above take place. Roof leak repair costs will be much cheaper than fixing those issues. So if your roof leaks in heavy rain, whether it’s a big or small leak, here’s what to do.

Clear the Way

If water is getting into the home, be sure to move any personal belongings out of the way. You don’t want your TV or couch also suffering from water damage.

Clear the area and make sure you know exactly where the water is coming from.

Contain the Water

With water falling into your home, likely from the ceiling, you’ll want to contain the mess. Flooring can be costly to replace if they are soaked for long periods of time.

Placing a bucket under a leak to catch the water is the most basic thing you can do to collect the water. You should place towels on the ground around the bucket to catch any splashing water.

If you have to leave the house for a period of time, put the largest container you can find under the leak, in case you are away for a while, or in case the leak gets bigger.

You might need to bring in a garbage dumpster or extra-large tote if you can’t find anything else.

Cover it Up

In many roof leak cases, the damaged roofing shingles are easy to spot. Shingles may be missing, or ripped, chewed through. If you can safely access your roof, it is wise to cover up the affected portion of your roof with a tarp.

You can tuck the ends of the tarp under the singles above the affected area to prevent water from sliding underneath the tarp. If it’s going to be a few days before help can arrive, using a staple gun to hold your tarp in place is a better option than praying it stays in place.

Collect Photos and Details

There’s a chance that your roof leak, and any additional damage caused by your leak, will be covered by insurance. You’ll want to check the details of your policy or contact your insurance provider to find out.

To file your claim, you’re going to need to provide details about the incident, and will probably need to include photos. Before taking steps to remedy the situation, take the best photos you can take for an easier claim filing process.

Call a Professional

Want to know how to stop a roof leak once and for all, so you can sleep in peace at night, even during a heavy rainstorm? You’ll need to call local roofing professionals.

Having a professional examine your affected roof will give you an idea of how much it will cost to repair the affected area. They will also give you a status update on the rest of the roof, to let you know if it’s time for a replacement or if you’re good for a few more years.

Your roofing expert can also look under the hood to figure out if any additional damage was done to the home, in the attic, or behind any walls. While many of these issues will be beyond the scope of their services, they can provide guidance and recommendations to ensure you get the right person to your house right away. After experiencing a roof leak, you’ll become much better at taking care of your roof. Since you know what happens if your roof is neglected, you won’t make the same mistake twice.

The Sooner the Better

Now that you know what to do if your roof is leaking, it’s time to get off your computer and go contain that leak. And the sooner you call a professional and schedule service, the sooner you can prevent your home from sustaining any additional damage, which could be costly even with insurance.

Signs That It Is Time to Replace Your HVAC Air Filters

HVAC Air Filters

Whether you’re in the middle of summer or winter, it’s critical that your HVAC system is working efficiently. Sometimes minor issues can cause major damages down the road.

One of the best ways to make sure your HVAC system continues functioning well is to replace the HVAC air filters.

There are several telltale signs that will tell you when they need to be replaced. To help you recognize these signs, here is everything you need to know.

Your Electricity Bill Is Increasing

One of the most common signs that you need to replace your HVAC air filter is if you notice your electricity bill increasing. It’s natural for your electricity bill to increase a little in the heat of summer or winter. But, if you see your bill going beyond your normal ranges, it may be time to replace the filter.

Though the culprit could also be a faulty appliance, it’s best to check the filter first as this is the simplest solution. You can save money by ordering Discount Filters

There’s More Dust by the Vents

Another reason it may be time to change your HVAC air filter is if you start noticing excessive dust near the vents. When it’s time to replace an air filter, homeowners will often see increasing amounts of dust on the furniture and appliances near their HVAC system.

If you’re unsure, you can try a “white sheet test.” This involves taking a white sheet and laying it about 5 inches from one of your HVAC vents. Leave it there for about 1-2 hours and then check on it.

If you notice that the color has started turning gray, it’s a sure sign that your filter needs replacing. The darker the sheet, the dirtier the filter.

Your HVAC Filters Appear Damaged

A more evident sign that it’s time to replace your HVAC air filter is if it looks damaged upon visual inspection. If it appears dirty, clogged, or something looks off, it’s probably best to change it.

If your filter has collected lots of dust and debris, it can cause holes and damage. This is especially true if it goes unaddressed.

By leaving your air filters damaged, you can cause additional problems for your HVAC system down the line.

Now You Know When Your HVAC Air Filters Need Replacing

These are all the main signs to look at when replacing your HVAC air filters. Replacing your filter is crucial for it to run properly. If the filters are damaged or clogged, your system won’t heat or cool to the appropriate levels.

This increases your electricity bill and wastes your money. The good news is that replacing your HVAC air filters is inexpensive and can be done fast.

So, why wait? Grab your new air filter and start breathing cleaner air today!

Interior Trends: How to Leverage Beautiful Aquarium Designs

Aquarium Designs

Does it feel like a room in your home is missing something?

If you’re wondering how to fill that void, how about installing a home aquarium? With different types of aquariums and tank decorations, it can be a fun and creative home project. Not only is it a trending interior design feature, but it has surprising health benefits as well.

But how do you incorporate aquarium designs into the interior of your home? Where exactly do you put the tank?

Fish aquariums can work in any room and add an element of relaxation and exotic flair. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Aquarium Designs as a Statement Focal Point

Sometimes, you only need to fill in some extra space in the room. To that end, aquariums do an excellent job.

Aquariums can breathe life into any room. Looking at colorful fishes swimming around is always entertaining. Anyone enjoying the view can easily relax and let go of their anxiety and stress.

If a room lacks color, an aquarium instantly solves that problem. Fishes like betta and mollies come in a wide range of colors. You can also apply your preferred palette when designing and building the tank.

Best of all, even a small aquarium can be the focal point of any room.

As a Room Divider

Here’s a space-saving idea. Who needs a solid wall to separate a large open space in your home? For example, if you need to divide the living room and the dining area, you can install an aquarium in between.

Glass aquariums are perfect because they’re a double-sided design element. Instead of looking at a boring wall, the people in either room have something delightful and pleasant to lay eyes on.

Built Into the Wall

Take your ideas to involve an aquarium into the interior design up a notch. This time, you can have the tank built into the wall.

Do you want to sleep with the fishes, but not in the “The Godfather” sort of way? Integrate the aquarium into the room above the headboard of your bed. You can even surround your bedroom with walls that have premium aquariums built-in and pretend you’re Princess Ariel or Nemo.

Some homes and luxury hotels even have aquariums above or surrounding the fireplace. It’s very intriguing, to say the least, because of the contrasting elements (fire and water). But you do have to worry about the temperature inside the tank whenever the fireplace is turned on.

As Furniture or Inside the Furniture

Do you want a statement piece that’s a surefire way to grab the attention of your guests? How about a coffee table with an aquarium tank base? With a transparent glass top, people can admire the living environment just beneath.

Or, if you have the funds, you can have a massive aquarium that serves as a kitchen island or a bar counter. But you don’t have to go that far. You can also have small pieces inside shelves or maybe a grandfather clock.

An Aquarium Is a Splendid Addition to Any Interior

Did any of these ideas resonate with your creative mind for decorating the interior of your home? What’s not to love about aquarium designs? They offer a unique way to improve the atmosphere and mood of any room.

4 Common Wine Storage Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Wine Storage Mistakes

Are you wondering how to store wine the right way? Well, then you’ve come to the right place.

The world of wine can be confusing, especially if you’re new to it. And once you’ve gone through the process of picking out the perfect wine, you have to figure out how to store it. But if this is something you struggle with, don’t worry because this list will help you out.

Keep reading to learn 4 common wine storage mistakes and how you can avoid them from now on.

1. Putting Wine In the Fridge

Here’s a little secret; wine doesn’t like super cold temperatures.

And putting your wine in a regular refrigerator is a quick way to spoil it. To put this into perspective, the ideal wine storage temperature is around 55 F whereas the average fridge is 40 F.

So instead of putting your wine in a regular fridge, put it in a wine fridge. That way, you can ensure your wine is staying at the correct temperature 24/7.

2. Keeping Wine In the Kitchen

The kitchen may seem like the logical place for wine since it’s a food item. But the kitchen fluctuates a lot in temperature, humidity, sound, and light, which wine hates. Seriously, some UV rays from a nearby window or a high humidity day will damage your wine.

The solution is to put your wine in a controlled environment like a wine cellar. But if you don’t have a wine cellar, your storage area should be moist, cool, and dark.

Pro tip: wine also shouldn’t be stored in the garage, attic, or laundry room.

3. Storing Wine Bottles Upright

When you buy wine at the store, the bottles are usually vertical. But when you get home, storing them upright can cause the cork to dry out over time, leading to premature aging.

The solution to this one is pretty simple, keep the bottles horizontal using a wood wall wine rack. Doing this will keep the cork moist for a long time and make for a better drinking experience.

Pro tip: bottles with screw tops don’t need to be stored horizontally, but it’s still an efficient way to store many bottles.

4. Not Recorking After Opening

After you open a bottle, it should last for 3-5 days. However, this rule only applies if you recork it properly. Because if you leave an open bottle of wine sitting out for hours, it’s going to lose a lot of its original properties.

To fix this problem, recork the bottle immediately after opening it. And if the cork breaks or crumbles, use a rubber wine stopper to seal it tight.

Don’t Make These Wine Storage Mistakes

If you’re currently making these wine storage mistakes, there’s still time to correct them! Just make sure you always keep the wine in a controlled environment and out of the kitchen. And next time you open a delicious bottle of wine, you’ll be glad you took the time to update your storage methods.
