This Is How to Spot Hail Damage on Your Roof

Published

on

This Is How to Spot Hail Damage on Your Roof

Hail is one of the most dangerous forms of precipitation that nature can produce. Small chunks of ice are damaging enough, but some ice chunks recorded in recent years have reached sizes of six to eight inches.

Your roof exists to keep you and your family safe from nature and elements like hail, but it can only do so much.

A hard-hitting hail storm can harm even the sturdiest of roofs, opening the door up to further damage later on. Because of that, spotting hail damage as soon as it happens is critical.

But how can you tell if your roof has hail-induced wear and tear?

Keep reading to learn about some of the different signs of hail damage that you’ll want to keep an eye out for, as well as why it’s important to spot.

When to Look for Hail Damage

Most modern roofs are built to last, so you shouldn’t worry about a small hail storm causing damage. Small chunks of hail will bounce harmlessly off the surface of your roof.

That being said, some factors can increase the potential for damage.

If powerful gusts of wind accompany a hail storm, the damage will often be more severe. High wind speeds propel the pieces of hail towards your roof at a faster velocity. They can also cause hail to strike your roof at an angle.

Of course, larger chunks of ice are often more likely to damage your roof than smaller ones. If you notice that the hail is bigger than normal, it’s worth checking your roof afterward.

Why Hail Roof Damage Can Be a Problem

Some people might not feel that hail damage warrants repairing a roof. After all, roofs are sturdy—shouldn’t they be able to handle a little wear and tear?

The problem with roof damage is that a small problem can often lead to a bigger one. What starts as a simple crack or dent can quickly turn into something more serious.

Aside from compromising the safety of your entire house, such problems are often much more expensive to fix. In some cases, you may even need to replace your entire roof.

Save yourself the trouble and inspect your roof as soon as you suspect that there may be damage. If you need to, hiring a hail damage claim lawyer can also be a good idea.

Signs of Hail Damage

Depending on the size of ice chunks and the severity of the hail storm, there are several different signs of hail damage that you’ll want to look for.

Here are some of the most common ones.

  1. Damage to Your Gutters

If chunks of ice are smashing into your roof and causing damage, your gutters are also going to suffer through a beating. Checking them can provide you some insight into whether or not the storm also damaged your roof.

Walk around your house and inspect the gutters for dents. You should also take a look at downspouts and gutter screens.

  1. Cracks

If you’re able to make it up on top of your roof, one of the most common signs of hail damage that you can look for are cracks on the surface of your roof shingles.

Roof shingles develop cracks naturally as they age. That being said, if you notice them specifically after a hail storm, you can bet that the storm caused them.

Cracks seem simple, but they weaken the structural integrity of your roof. They also open the door up to leaks, which in turn can lead to water damage and other problems.

  1. Bruises

You might not realize it, but your roof also bruises when it sustains damage. These look like pockmarks or dents but are smaller in size.

If the bruises look small, you might be able to get away with just monitoring them. However, if they’re large, you might want to call a professional to come and inspect them.

Your roof will be more susceptible to additional wear and tear later on.

One way to identify the severity of the bruises is to press down on them. If the bruises give when you push, that’s not a good sign.

  1. Bubbles

Bubbles might sound nice, but you don’t want them on your roof. As their name suggests, these appear in the form of small and uneven lumps spread across the surface of your roof.

Bubbles form when gas in the asphalt layer of your shingles releases outward. This then leads to the forming of peculiarly shaped objects.

After a period of time, the surface of these bubbles erodes. What you’re left with is a weakened shingle that needs repair.

  1. Exposed Roofing

One of the most common signs of room damage is exposed roofing. This is when hail causes pieces of your roof to fly off.

Do a walk around the exterior of your home and see if you can spot any shiny areas. If you do, know that this is the under part of your roof and that you should contact someone to come and inspect it as soon as possible.

You can also look for areas where it looks like the granules from the shingles got knocked off.

Know the Signs

If you live in an area that recently experienced a hail storm, it might be time to investigate your roof for hail damage.

Use this guide as a resource to help you know what signs of damage to look for. When it comes to repairs, you can try to DIY, but we recommend working with a professional.

Ready, Set, Move! 7 Things You Must Do before Moving to a New State

Published

on

By

New State

Living in one place for your whole life might sound nice to some people. For others, it can feel like you’re setting yourself up for boredom. If you’re someone who is considering caving to your wanderlust, then you might be thinking about moving to a new state for a change of scenery.

That’s easier said than done, of course.

There are a ton of different things that you need to consider in order to pull off an out-of-state move. If you’ve never to a new state, you may not be privy to all of the finer details that are necessary for success. Read on to learn all the insider tips and tricks to out-of-state moves!

1. Consider Your Needs and Wants

When you start to get the itch to move, the worst thing you can do is pick a city at random and pack up and go. Living that spontaneously might sound fun, but it’s also a good way to burn a ton of money and end up in a place you don’t really like.

Instead, spend some time thinking about everything you need and want in a place you live. For example, if you want a bustling metropolis with a diverse array of restaurants, then you should look at big cities like New York and Los Angeles. If you like smaller college towns, then you should consider places like Chapel Hill, North Carolina or Charlottesville, Virginia.

From there, you can refine your search with things like transportation options and weather types. The more work you put in ahead of time, the better your chances of happiness in your new city.

2. Take Some Time to Visit

Once you’ve narrowed down your search to a few different locales, then it’s important to take some time to visit them in person.

It’s really hard to know how you’re really going to feel about a city if you’ve never been there before. Even if you’re dead set on one city in particular, you won’t know which neighborhoods you like best unless you visit first. Visiting will also help you get a feel for things like traffic and commutes.

If you’re interviewing for a job or visiting your new office, then take some time while you’re there to check out the town. Don’t be afraid to ask current residents for advice!

3. Set Your Budget

It’s no secret that moving out of state is an expensive endeavor. In order to properly plan for your move, it’s important to set out a budget for your whole move.

If you’re moving to a new apartment, then you’ll want to consider things like first month’s rent, the deposit, and deposits for utilities. If you’re buying a house, you’ll want to factor in things like closing costs and any cash that you need to pay up front, such as earnest money.

You’ll also want to reach out to moving companies to get a quote for the move itself. Large out-of-state moves can cost thousands of dollars.

4. Start Your Housing Search

You’ve done your homework. You know where you’re going and you know which neighborhoods you’re interested in. Your next step is to plan your housing search.

If you’re searching for an apartment, you’ll generally want to start the leasing process about 30 days out from your move. Most apartment communities will not hold a vacant apartment for more than 14 days, so you’ll need to be flexible if you find the perfect place.

If you’re purchasing a house, then you’ll want to start your search much earlier. Do some research on the housing market and how long escrow usually takes. Many people find it’s easier to move into an apartment on a month-to-month or short-term lease and then purchase a home.

5. Pare Down Your Belongings

Remember your moving budget? The amount of money you spend on your move is going to be largely determined by how much stuff you bring. The cost of moving furniture that is awkward or large in size and lots of boxes can add up fast.

Take some time to go through your stuff to choose what you want to keep and what you want to sell, give away, or trash. If you have old furniture, it might actually be more economical to buy new furniture once you’re in your new space than move the old stuff. Plus, having a moving sale can help you fund your move!

6. Pack Early

There’s nothing more stressful than trying to pack everything up at the last minute, so save yourself the stress and start packing ASAP!

Start by packing up things that you rarely use, such as heirloom china or collectors items. As you get closer to your move date, you can pack up things you use more frequently. Be sure to label everything clearly so you know where everything is once you’re in your new space!

Consider saving a single box to pack up on moving day. This will include essential items you need when you’re leaving and arriving at your destination.

7. Plan Your Travel

The last step is to plan how you’ll get to your new home.

If you’re thinking of driving, check with the movers to see when they can drop off your furniture so you can plan your road trip accordingly. If you’re thinking of flying, then you’ll want to make arrangements for your car to be moved (if you have one) and purchase your airline tickets.

Are You Thinking of Moving to a New State?

Moving to a new state is the start of a new adventure, but as exciting as the prospect can be, it can also feel overwhelming. The best thing you can do is to take your time and get started with your plans long before you plan on making the big move. With careful planning, you can save yourself a ton of stress and focus more on all the exciting parts of a new locale!

What Are the Best Months for Selling a House?

Published

Selling a House

In your current home town, you’ve been bouncing around from job to job for a while. You would like to find something more stable, but that would involve moving to a location where your area of expertise is more in demand.

If that’s the only choice you have though, that’s your only choice. It’s time to put your home up on the market and move on to the next stage of your life. We’re here to say that your timing is everything.

What are the best months for selling a house? Check out this guide to find out when you should put your place up on the market.

How Long Does It Take to List?

Before you start considering months, it’s important to figure out how long to sell a house. You don’t want to be dead set on listing in the spring, only to have to push it to the summer because you didn’t get your timing right.

You need at least two months of prep. This will give you a big enough window to take pictures of your house, get on the phone with a real estate agent, and start getting a few offers for your lovely home.

Spring

Depending on the weather in your area, spring is most likely the best time of year to sell a house. More specifically, April-May is a good time frame to look at.

It’s around this time that people get their tax returns. This means they have money to put toward a down payment and any renovations the house may need.

Since the weather is nicer in the spring, people will be more motivated to schedule a time to look for homes. All the blooming flora will make the outside of your house look awesome. School is also ending around this time, so parents aren’t forced to uproot their kids in the middle of a semester.

There are a few cons to listing in the spring. For one, if your area sees a lot of April showers, nobody is going to want to go house shopping.

Since it’s the best time to sell a house, the competition is going to be strong. With spring comes graduation parties too. That might make it harder for people to find parking to tour your house.

Summer

If you don’t quite make it onto the housing market in the spring, that’s okay. You always have the summer. There’s more sunlight to burn during this time of year, so you can squeeze in more tours than normal.

Buyers want to get settled into a new home before the school year starts back if they have kids. They don’t have a large window for that, which means they’ll be pretty eager. They may even make you a better offer to try and speed things along.

The weather during the summer is nice, but it’s hot. Some would prefer to stay shut inside their own homes where there’s AC. Like in the spring, the real estate market is super competitive.

Summertime is peak vacation hours. Many people who would have bought at a house might opt out so they have more spending money. They also don’t have a lot of time to look at houses if they are out with their families.

Fall

Fall is a hit or miss for most home sellers. On the one hand, changing colors might give you a nice boost of curb appeal. On the other hand, not many people are buying this time of year. That’s not always a bad thing, though.

It means that you won’t have as much competition when you’re trying to sell your house. The people who couldn’t get a home during the busy months will be eager to close on a place before the holidays roll around.

If you need to fix up your home before you sell it, house selling tips dictate that this is the best time for that. Since the busy season is at its end, professionals will have plenty of slots to make repairs and renovations. This means the overall price for your job won’t be quite as high either.

Buyers will be desperate to close in on the home, but not so desperate that they won’t be a little demanding given the lack of competition. With the fall comes rain and sometimes snow. People don’t want to go out in the nasty weather to go house shopping.

Not every seller has the advantage of having trees covered in beautiful leaves. Bare trees and dead foliage won’t do much for your curb appeal. You’ll have to do a lot more landscaping work to keep your yard looking good.

Winter

Most sellers avoid putting their homes on the market in the winter. The cold weather tends to keep buyers away. Snow-covered yards are hard to see.

People won’t want to go forward with the purchase if they can’t get a good look at the landscape. If you live in an area where it’s hot during the winter, your competition will skyrocket.

With the holidays in full swing, it’s hard to upkeep your home for tours. Things are just too hectic. Moving is also harder on families financially during this time of year.

On the upside, people who are looking at your home will want to hurry along with the process before the end of the year. They want to take advantage of those sweet, sweet tax breaks.

Real estate agents who are trying to make as many sales as possible before the year ends will be extra motivated to help you. You also have more staging opportunities if you’re selling around Christmas.

Best Months for Selling a House as Fast as Possible

Do you have a home that you’re trying to sell? You might have more luck depending on the time of year that you put it on the market. What are the best months for selling a house?

That all depends on the area where you live. We hope that you’re able to use the information that you read here today to sell your place as fast as possible.

Once you sell your house and move into a new one, you’ll have to set to work making it feel like your own. Check out the Home Decor section of our blog daily for decoration tips.

5 Tips for Managing Your Own Rental Property

Published

on

By

Your Own Rental Property

Owning a rental property comes with many perks. For one thing, it’ll provide you with a passive income source.

That’s not all, there are many tax benefits that you can take advantage of as well. For example, you can deduct property taxes that you’ve incurred for your property.

Keep in mind, however, that the process can also be stressful. After all, it requires a lot of responsibility and money.

Are you thinking of renting out your home? Looking for some tips? If so, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading for everything that you need to know about becoming a landlord!

  1. Have a Thorough Screening Process

Depending on the vacancy rate in your area, you may be faced with many applications. That’s why it’s so important to screen your potential tenants. It’ll ensure that the individual is reliable, which will save you many headaches down the road.

Not only will you want to conduct a credit check, but it’s also a good idea to look at their employment history, rental history, and any eviction and court records.

  1. Familiarize Yourself With the Law

Make sure to familiarize yourself with the law. Know your legal responsibilities. This means maintaining the condition of the property and responding in a timely manner to all tenant requests.

It’s also important that you keep all vital services such as electricity and heat working properly.

  1. Write a Thorough Lease Agreement

The lease is a binding agreement between the landlord and the tenant. Put it simply, it governs what each party can and can’t do during the term of the lease.

Given that, it’s important that it’s well written. All of the terms should be laid out clearly. In the chance of a legal dispute, it can greatly improve your outcomes.

  1. Stay On Top of Maintenance

Be ready to fix any issues that may arise in a timely manner. This includes things like plumbing problems, leaky roofs, or malfunctioning electrical systems.

Tip: Consider doing regular inspections on your rental property—that’ll help ensure that everything is working properly.

  1. Collect Rent On Time

There are many ways that you can collect rent. For example, you can accept payment through checks, direct deposit, or other electrical methods.

Don’t hesitate to charge a late fee if the payment is late (assuming that it’s written out on the lease). Also, don’t accept partial payments if you plan on evicting. Depending on where you live, it can result in costly delays in the eviction process.

Managing Your Own Rental Property

Managing a rental property has its pros and cons. As long as you know what you’re doing, however, it can be a good investment. That’s why it’s so important to do your research beforehand.
