His political rise continued in the mid-1980s, when in 1985 he received the appointment of deputy secretary and secretary of the Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of Shanghai, being elected mayor of the same city. In 1987 he became a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In June 1989, after the crisis in the Chinese government which led to bloody clashes between students and Chinese authorities in Tiananmen Square, Jiang Zemin joined the Standing Committee of the Politburo and was elected Secretary-General of the Party Communist Chinese, position in which he replaced Zhao Ziyang. In November during the Fifth Plenary meeting of the XIII Central Committee, he was appointed head of the Military Committee of the Central Committee of the People’s Republic of China, position in which he replaced Deng, and with which he managed to accumulate more power over himself.
