Son of a humble family, in its youth it was united to a group of itinerant theater with which in 1920 crossed the United States. After emigrating to this country, it worked in several theater companies of Broadway, with irregular success.
In 1932 he filmed This is the night, his first film, in which he played a supporting role but that marked the beginning of a brilliant career. During the following years, he became one of the most outstanding actors of Hollywood, especially thanks to his aristocratic bearing and his comedic gifts.
