In 2021, computer game distributor Steam broke the 50,000 games listed mark. Video games have become both diverse and ubiquitous. A lot of those games have high system requirements, though, which means you’re going to need a nice computer.
If you’re someone who’s on the go a lot, though, a desktop might not be the best fit. That might have you asking yourself, “Should I buy a gaming laptop?” The combination of performance profile and portable package holds some appeal.
Any type of computer ends up a big purchase. You want confidence you’re spending your money right.
Come with us as we look at some of the ups and downs of a laptop for gaming.
Should I Buy a Gaming Laptop?
When considering a gaming laptop, you’ll need to weigh the following pros and cons. We won’t look closely at the obvious ones like portability and power. It wouldn’t be a gaming computer if it weren’t powerful, and it wouldn’t be a laptop if it weren’t portable.
Pro: Stylish
Gaming laptops have developed a unique sense of style. They often offer RGB keyboards, a slick form factor, and case designs that convey power.
If “having a design that will wow your friends” rates as a priority for you, a gaming laptop will provide.
Con: Weight and Bulk
Squeezing all of that power into a laptop tends to create bulky, hefty machines. Keeping a gaming laptop cool often means a larger shell to handle those fans. Most also have the num pads that some conventional laptops skip.
If you’re attached to your old laptop bag this can get annoying fast.
Pro: Ports
While notebooks often skip several ports to keep the form factor slim, gaming laptops tend to have more USB ports and often other ports as well. An Ethernet port allows for the reliability of wired connections for playing online games, and HDMI ports allow you to hook up to a larger screen when you have the opportunity.
The next time you click through to look at laptops, look at the ports. If you want to do a peripheral-heavy activity like VTubing or VR, make sure your choice has what you need.
Con: Difficult to Upgrade or Repair
While a few manufacturers offer ways to upgrade your existing gaming laptop, most gaming laptops put a bunch of obstacles between you and an upgrade. Even small upgrades like changing thermal paste can lead to cracks in your case and other small problems.
Even the best gaming laptop will age. The performance profile won’t last forever. Parts will break, too.
Make sure you price that into your considerations when you buy.
Play With Power, Play Smart
“Should I buy a gaming laptop?” is a question whose answer shakes out differently for different people. Whether you decide on a desktop, a portable device like a Steam Deck, or a laptop, make sure you do your research and make a choice you’ll stay happy with for years to come.
